Passageway
Stone, stone paving, olive
trees, plants
Sculpture Garden for Peace
and Coexistence, Kaukab Abu ElHija,
Israel, 1995/96
The idea for
this installation arose from the topographical situation of the place,
which is situated on the ridge of a hill. From here the visitor is
offered two strikingly different views: one view westwards towards the
Mediterranean Sea and the other one towards Kaukab village, which is
beautifully situated on a rounded mound against the backdrop of
successive layers of mountain ridges leading towards the Upper Galilee
The installation accentuates this transition from one
view to the other by creating a passageway, marked on either side by
monolithic blocks of local stone of varying shape, size and orientation.
The experience of the visitor following the path from the southwest is
lead to a culminating point when passing through a narrow gate which is
accentuated by the tallest rocks. After passing this gateway the space
opens up onto an open paved area of rounded and slightly concave shape.
Here the view is directed towards the village, which one is meeting
here, as it were, for the first time. A subtle correspondence can be
felt between the concave shape of the surface one is standing on and the
convex shape of the village on the mound one is facing.
